Steam & WaterThe production of pulp and paper requires the input of a number of services, namely steam, electricity, water and compressed air. SteamShoalhaven Paper Mill’s steam is produced in coal-fired boilers. The gas emissions
from the boilers are filtered through a fabric filter or bag house which was
installed in 1994. The quality of the emissions exceeds the requirements of
the NSW EPA. The ash from the boilers is collected by a submerged conveyor, transported via a skip hoist to a storage hopper prior to being trucked off site for use as a horticultural product.

WaterShoalhaven Paper Mill uses raw water from the Shoalhaven River which is supplied to the Mill by the Shoalhaven City Council from its Flat Rock pumping station upstream of Nowra. The Mill processes the water so it is suitable for paper production in it’s own water treatment plant which consists of two primary clarifiers followed by sand filters. A demineralisation plant is then used to purify water that is used in the boilers as the water quality needs to be of a very high standard.
